RCMP identification standard
Identification requirements
Bring two pieces of valid government-issued identification to your appointment — and bring both the original and a copy of each. At least one of the two must show your photo and signature.
Primary identification
Any of the following is accepted as a primary piece of ID.
- Driver's licence (Canadian province or territory)
- Foreign driver's licence
- Canadian passport
- Foreign passport
- Canadian Citizenship Card
- Canadian Permanent Resident Card
- Certificate of Indian Status
- Student identity card from a foreign institute
- Firearms Possession Certificate
- Firearms Acquisition Certificate
- Record of Landing
- CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) Identification Card
- Federal, provincial, or municipal identification card
- Military Family Identification Card
- Work or Study Permit issued to a foreign national
Secondary identification
Accepted as the second piece, alongside one primary ID.
- Birth certificate
- Baptismal certificate
- Hunting licence
- Fishing licence
- Marriage licence
- Hospital card
- Immigration papers
- Union membership card
- Private-industry employee identification card
Good to know

A SIN card, health card, or credit card is not accepted as identification (per RCMP requirements).

Only original IDs are accepted — certified copies are accepted as a secondary ID only.
