What is an RCMP criminal record check?
An RCMP criminal record check confirms whether you have a criminal record on file with the RCMP. We obtain it by capturing your fingerprints electronically with the Live-Scan system and submitting them directly to the RCMP. As an RCMP-accredited Direct Connect agency, we transmit your fingerprints to the RCMP’s CCRTIS ourselves — no third parties.
A fingerprint-based check is the most accurate result, because you are identified by your fingerprints rather than only your name and date of birth.

By Canada Post, to you or a third party.
If there is no match to a criminal record, the RCMP usually processes your check in about three business days — most people have their certificate within two to four weeks including delivery. If the RCMP finds a possible match, manual processing can take up to 120 business days. That is the RCMP's timeline, and the process cannot be expedited.

What you’ll receive
Your result is a certified Criminal Record Check, issued and mailed by the RCMP. The wording depends on what the RCMP finds.
- No criminal record The certificate confirms there is no criminal record on file matching your fingerprints.
- A record exists The certificate sets out the record on file. Manual processing applies and takes longer.
- Privacy Act request A copy of your own information held by the RCMP, requested under the Privacy Act.
Wherever you are fingerprinted in Canada, the RCMP processes and mails the certificate from Ottawa. The result cannot be expedited, and F1 is not involved in issuing or delivering it.
