Before a Commissioner for Oaths

Commissioning of oaths, affirmations & declarations

What does commissioning a document mean?

A Commissioner for Oaths (also called a Commissioner for taking Affidavits) is authorised to witness you swear an oath, make an affirmation, or sign a solemn declaration — your formal statement that what a document says is true.

You bring a completed document, confirm your identity, swear or affirm it before the Commissioner, then sign it in their presence. They witness your signature, sign, and add their stamp — and you walk out with it the same visit.

Documents we can commission

If your document needs a sworn signature witnessed by a Commissioner, we can likely help. Common examples, grouped by what they're for:

Identity & status

  • Statutory declaration of identity
  • Declaration of marital status
  • Name & signature declarations

Immigration & travel

  • Invitation letters for immigration
  • Travel consent letter for a child
  • Declarations for visa applications

Property & assets

  • Affidavit for vehicle ownership transfer
  • Declarations of ownership
  • Service Ontario documents

Professional & claims

  • Professional accreditation
  • Insurance-claim declarations
  • Lost or damaged passport declaration
Clear scope, no surprises

What commissioning is — and what it isn't

Commissioning is about witnessing your sworn signature — not about the contents of your document. Knowing the line keeps your appointment quick and your document accepted.

Within our mandate

What a Commissioner does

  • Confirms your identity
  • Administers your oath, affirmation or declaration
  • Witnesses you sign, in person
  • Signs and applies their official stamp
Outside our mandate

What we don't do

  • Give legal advice of any kind
  • Verify or vouch for what your document says
  • Draft or complete your document for you

We can't commission Wills, Powers of Attorney, or Divorce / Separation documents.

For those, please consult a lawyer or a notary qualified to handle them.

Your appointment, step by step

A short, in-person appointment. Bring your completed document; leave with it sworn, signed and witnessed.

  1. ID verification

The Commissioner checks your government-issued photo ID.

  2. Document review & oath

They review your document, then administer the right oath, affirmation or declaration.

  3. Sign before the Commissioner

You sign in the right places, in their presence. They witness it, sign, and add their stamp.

  4. Take your document

Your sworn, witnessed document is handed back to you on the spot.

Please don't sign your document beforehand — you must sign it in front of the Commissioner. Bring it completed, but unsigned.

Before your visit

A few things that keep your appointment quick and your document accepted.

  • Bring it completed

Have your document filled in and ready — just don't sign it yet.

  • Don't pre-sign

You must sign in front of the Commissioner, so they can witness it.

  • Valid photo ID

    Bring current government-issued photo identification.

  • Documents you draft

We don't draft documents — bring your own, or contact us for guidance.

  • Confidential

Your document and information stay private; we don't keep or reuse them.

  • By appointment

Book ahead so a Commissioner is available when you arrive.
