Document authentication confirms a Canadian document is genuine, by verifying the seal and signature of the authority that issued it — so it can be trusted outside Canada.
An apostille does this in one step. It is recognised between all members of the Hague Apostille Convention, which Canada joined in January 2024 — so a document carrying an apostille is accepted in any member country with no further embassy legalisation.

For documents issued or notarised in Ontario, the province authenticates them through its Official Documents Services. We notarise at our office, submit your file to the provincial office in Toronto, and return it to you — usually within about a week.

We notarise at our office and make a scanned copy of each document separately, to attach to the application. Any original that must be apostilled is mailed to our Dundas office.

We return your original documents to you, except any that must be apostilled in original form.
Submitted for authentication
We submit your notarised documents to Ontario's Official Documents Services in Toronto, which issues the provincial apostille.
Pay & collect
You pay the Apostille (Inland-Express) fee, and your apostilled document is returned to you by pickup or courier.
Common examples are Ontario birth and marriage certificates, educational documents, and notarised copies. Not every document is eligible for a provincial apostille — check Ontario's current list before you send anything, and we will confirm.

Government fees are set by Ontario, and notary fees follow our notary rates — both are on top of the apostille fee. Extra mailing may apply for a foreign address (Canada Post or DHL); our Dundas office will contact you. Processing takes about 5–10 business days, including mailing.

If the receiving country belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention, Global Affairs Canada issues an apostille certificate — and your document is ready to use there. No embassy or consulate step.
If the receiving country is not a member, the document is authenticated and then legalised at that country's embassy or consulate in Canada before it is accepted.
